A Pause to Look Back

At Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O), we often speak about the future, new treatments, advanced research, and better outcomes. But recently, we paused to look back and honor a silent hero that has been at the heart of our cancer care for over a decade. In a rare and deeply emotional ceremony, our doctors, nurses, and support staff gathered to bid farewell to our trusted Medical Linear Accelerator. Installed in 2010, this machine was not just a piece of metal and circuitry — for us, it was a partner in saving lives.

A Workhorse of Hope: The Legacy

When we installed this machine 14 years ago, our goal was to bring world-class radiation oncology to Mangalore. We never imagined how integral it would become to our daily mission. As Dr. D. Suresh Rao, our Director and Senior Oncologist, shared during the decommissioning ceremony: *"Although it has no life, this machine has given life to thousands of people. It has been a member of the M.I.O family."* The numbers speak to its incredible legacy:

13,000 to 14,000 patients treated: Each number represents a person, a family, and a fight for survival. 22 Hours a Day: To ensure no patient was left waiting, this machine operated relentlessly from 4:00 AM to 2:00 AM the next day, taking only a two-hour break. 14+ Years of Service: A testament to the dedication of our technical team who maintained it with precision.

Why We Are Saying Goodbye

It is never easy to let go of something that works so well. However, in the fast-evolving world of oncology, staying at the forefront means embracing change. Manufacturers eventually stop supporting older models, and technology advances to offer even greater precision. The decision to decommission the machine was made to ensure that M.I.O continues to offer the highest standard of care available globally.

The Future is Here: A ₹25 Crore Upgrade

While the farewell was emotional with over 200 staff members lighting candles and paying respects the mood at M.I.O is also one of immense excitement. We are proud to announce that M.I.O is installing a new, state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator worth ₹25 Crores. This next-generation technology will be operational within the next three months. What this means for our patients:

Enhanced Precision: Targeting tumors with even greater accuracy while sparing healthy tissue. Faster Treatment Times: Reducing the time patients need to spend on the table. Advanced Capabilities: Allowing us to treat complex cases that require the latest in radiation therapy.

A Promise to Mangalore

As we transition from the old to the new, our core promise remains unchanged. Whether it is the machine that served us for 14 years or the advanced technology arriving soon, the heart of M.I.O lies in our compassion, our dedication, and our relentless pursuit of a cancer-free future. Thank you to the "Iron Healer" that served us well. And to our community get ready for the next chapter of advanced cancer care at M.I.O.
