M.I.O. Launches Cancer Household Survey in Shivamogga: 1 Lakh Homes, 8,000 Women, One Mission
Mangalore Institute of Oncology and Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust launch a Cancer Household Survey in Shivamogga targeting 1 lakh homes and 8,000 women for early detection of breast and cervical cancer, inaugurated by Sri K.S. Eshwarappa.

A Historic Launch for Rural Healthcare
In a significant move toward building a cancer-aware society, Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O), in partnership with the Sanjeevini Cancer Seva Trust (R.), has officially launched the Cancer Household Survey Campaign in Shivamogga. The initiative was inaugurated by former Deputy Chief Minister Sri K.S. Eshwarappa, marking a historic milestone in rural healthcare outreach for the region.
A Silent Threat: Why Awareness Is Our Strongest Weapon
During the inauguration, Sri K.S. Eshwarappa highlighted that cancer often arrives silently, making awareness our most powerful line of defence. He applauded M.I.O.'s commitment to taking specialised healthcare beyond urban centres like Mangalore and into the heart of Shivamogga. "When a medical institution like M.I.O. reaches out to the common man, it replaces fear with hope. This campaign is a lifesaver for thousands of families." — Sri K.S. Eshwarappa
Vision of M.I.O: Cure Is Possible with Early Detection
Dr. D. Suresh Rao, Director, Mangalore Institute of Oncology and Senior Oncologist, addressed the gathering with a message that anchors everything M.I.O. does in the community cancer is completely curable if caught at Stage 1 or Stage 2. He noted that while cancer incidence is rising due to environmental factors including water and air pollution, the problem is not incurability it is late detection. At M.I.O., patients frequently arrive at Stage 3 or Stage 4, where treatment becomes significantly more complex. This campaign is designed to change that.
What the Campaign Will Do
The Cancer Household Survey is one of the most ambitious community health initiatives M.I.O. has undertaken outside Mangalore:
8,000 Women Reached: Targeted awareness for breast and cervical cancer, two of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early. 1 Lakh Households Surveyed: A door-to-door initiative to collect health data and educate families on symptoms and risk factors. Cancer Information Centres: Bridging the gap between M.I.O.'s world-class expertise and rural and semi-urban communities across Southern Karnataka.
Why Shivamogga?
The campaign is not just about data, it is about people. Shivamogga sits at the heart of the Malnad region, surrounded by farming and plantation communities where lifestyle habits, environmental exposure, and limited access to specialist care create a compounded health risk. By identifying risks early, whether linked to lifestyle, occupational exposure, or environmental toxins, M.I.O. aims to meaningfully reduce cancer mortality across Southern Karnataka. Prominent community figures including N. Gopinath, President, Namma Kanasina Shivamogga, K.E. Kanthesh, and Umesh Aradhya joined the event, lending their voice and support to M.I.O.'s outreach mission.
M.I.O.'s Promise to Shivamogga and Beyond
As a leader in oncology across coastal and inland Karnataka, Mangalore Institute of Oncology remains committed to one belief: knowledge is the best defence. Whether through the state-of-the-art facility in Mangalore or outreach programmes in Shivamogga, Thirthahalli, and beyond, M.I.O. is here to support every family at every step.
