From Classrooms to Champions: How M.I.O.'s Healthy Hero Program is Transforming Rural Karnataka
M.I.O.'s Healthy Hero program reaches government schools in Araga and Seebinakere, Thirthahalli, empowering rural children through role-plays, interactive games, and health pledges to become lifelong ambassadors of wellness for their families.

At Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O.), we believe that the foundation of a healthy nation lies in the well-being of its children. To turn this belief into reality, we are proud to champion the 'HEALTHY HERO' program, a visionary initiative conceptualized by our Director, Dr. D Suresh Rao.
The Vision: Informed Kids, Healthy India
The goal of 'Healthy Hero' is simple yet profound: to create a generation of informed, aware, and active children who will grow up to lead a healthy India. Dr. D Suresh Rao understands that habits formed in childhood often last a lifetime. By stepping out of the hospital and into the classrooms, M.I.O. is ensuring that health education is not just a chapter in a textbook, but a way of life.
Learning Through Fun
Recently, the M.I.O. team traveled to the green landscapes of Thirthahalli to bring this program to students at two key institutions:
- Government Higher Primary School, Araga
- Government Higher Primary School, Seebinakere
We know that children learn best when they are engaged and entertained. That’s why the 'Healthy Hero' sessions didn't involve boring lectures. Instead, our team utilized the carefully designed 'Be Your Own Health Hero' module.
Highlights of the Day
The atmosphere at the schools was electric with energy!
- Role Plays: Staff of M.I.O stepped into the shoes of 'Health Heroes,' acting out scenarios that taught them how to say no to bad habits and yes to nutrition and hygiene.
- Fun-Filled Activities: Through interactive games, children learned the importance of physical activity, avoiding tobacco/drugs, and maintaining personal hygiene.
- Empowerment: The core message passed to every student was that they are in charge of their own health. They left the session not just as students, but as ambassadors of health for their families.
Why This Matters
Programs like 'Healthy Hero' bridge the gap between medical expertise and the community. By reaching out to government schools in rural and semi-urban areas, M.I.O. is ensuring that high-quality health awareness is accessible to everyone, regardless of geography. We thank the teachers and staff at Araga and Seebinakere for opening their doors to us and helping us plant the seeds for a cancer-free, healthy future.
