Health Education That Goes Where It's Needed Most
True healthcare extends far beyond hospital walls, it begins in our communities and schools. On February 14, 2026, Mangalore Institute of Oncology (M.I.O) took a significant step in its preventive healthcare mission by organizing an interactive awareness program at Aided Higher Primary School in Ammunje. Surrounded by the serene rural landscape of Bantwal Taluk, our team introduced the students to the 'Healthy Hero' program; an initiative designed to plant the seeds of wellness and disease prevention at a young age.
The Vision: Health Equity Through Education
Driven by the vision of our Director, Dr. D Suresh Rao, the 'Healthy Hero' project focuses on government-aided and Kannada-medium schools to ensure health equity. The goal is simple yet profound: to transform young students into confident health ambassadors who can influence their families and villages towards better lifestyle choices.
Highlights: Transforming Lessons into Lifelong Habits
The atmosphere at the Ammunje Aided School was vibrant as students eagerly participated in a curriculum designed to make health education fun and memorable.
- Engaging Role-Plays: Our M.I.O. outreach team took to the stage to act out real-life scenarios. These skits highlighted the dangers of substance abuse, the benefits of active living, and the power of a balanced diet — making the lessons highly relatable for the children.
- The 'Healthy Hero' Pledge: The highlight of the morning was a unified pledge. Students raised their hands and promised to protect their health, practice good hygiene, and educate their local community about disease prevention.
- Play-Based Learning: We integrated health facts into engaging games, teaching the children that building a strong immune system is their daily superpower.
- Vitamin C in Action: To leave a lasting, practical impact, the M.I.O. team distributed fresh oranges to every student at the end of the program. This gesture reinforced the day's lesson on nutrition, showing the children that healthy eating can be both accessible and enjoyable.
