MIO is well equipped with advanced nuclear medicine/Positron emissiom tomograpghy (PET- CT) facilities. During this diagnostic procedure, radio active materials(Radiotraces) are injected into the blood stream, inhaled or swallowed which gets circulated within the body and the gamma rays emitted are captured by special camera & computer to create images of patients “hot spots”.

When a person is suspected to have cancer the doctor will ask for certain tests to be performed with blood or/and biopsy from a suspected area. he results obtained after analyzing these samples will help the diagnosis and to plan further advanced tests and/or treatment. In other cancers blood is important as it gives information on the vital organs like heart, liver and kidney. Blood is also required for complete blood count (CBC) where counts of the blood components the red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and platelets are essential.

Chemotherapy achieved with infused and oral medication is an important modality in cancer treatment and cure and we at MIO, have placed high emphasis for the optimal functioning of the pharmacy. The hospital has a comprehensive pharmacy and all approved drugs are available at one counter. The core services are valuable for breast medical oncology, gastrointestinal oncology, genitourinary oncology, gynecologic oncology, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma/sarcoma, nutrition support, palliative care, pediatrics, thoracic/head and neck.

However in India most people do not adhere to the follow up plan of the doctors. A study done at MIO showed that the main reasons for the patient not adhering to follow-up are Travel long distances to meet the doctor, Dependency on their caregivers to accompany them to the hospital.The problematic factor is that in most cases the patients are elderly and principal the care givers are their children who have the responsibility of working and taking care of their children.
