The outreach centers:
In cancer, after the completion of treatment regular follow-up to detect any recurrence at the treated site and or spread to other parts is very important. However in India most people do not adhere to the follow up plan of the doctors. A study done at MIO showed that the main reasons for the patient not adhering to follow-up are
- Travel long distances to meet the doctor
- Dependency on their caregivers to accompany them to the hospital
The problematic factor is that in most cases the patients are elderly and principal the care givers are their children who have the responsibility of working and taking care of their children. On realizing this, MIO started outreach centers in rural and far off places where the doctors visit these centers on a regular basis and attend to the treated patients. Today these out-reach centers which have been going on for more than three years are helping both the patient and his family and the whole society at large.
