Surgical Oncology

Remove the cancer and an area of healthy tissue surrounding it in order to prevent the cancer from reocurring.

Surgical Oncology is an important treatment mode and involves cutting away the cancer tissue from the body. Surgery also plays a key role in diagnosing cancer and finding out how far it may have spread. Once the surgery has been performed the surgeon will send the tissue removed from the body to a pathology laboratory. Here the tissue is processed to be seen under a microscope and get a clear idea on the type of cancer, the stage, extent of the disease and immuno-histochemistry (IHC) studies. The detail analysis by the pathologist will help cancer doctors to decide whether the patient needs further treatment to reduce the risk of appearance of cancer in the operated area or far from the site. Depending on the tumor type, the stage, the location of the tumor and the age of the patient, treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy may be used alone or in combination. At times some people have treatment before surgery to help shrink a cancer and make it easier to remove. This is called neo adjuvant treatment.

The mission and objective of the Surgical Oncology Department of MIO is to provide very latest treatment in a compassionate environment. Our surgeons are highly trained and motivated and perform the removal of complex tumors along with cosmetically accepted reconstruction procedures with the able support of an equally supportive anesthetics, recovery and ICU staff. They also work with medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, nutritionists and other team members to ensure the best result for each patient.

Specialized surgeries like skull base, composite resections along with micro vascular reconstructions of flaps procedures, modified radical mastectomy, breast conservative surgeries, breast oncoplastic procedures involving implant placement, laparoscopic surgery in staging and diagnosis, gastro-intestinal surgeries involving gastro-esophageal, hepato-pancreatic biliary and colorectal procedures,  Genitourinary, gynecological, endocrine, musculoskeletal involving limb conserving surgery in bone tumors are performed regularly with good clearance margins and aesthetical superior results. In addition, whenever possible our emphasis is to perform organ sparing surgeries without compromising on the tumor removal. Our this approach especially in the head and neck cancer and breast cancer has been that, post recovery and completion of treatment, the patients who have underwent organ sparing surgeries have had lesser psychological stress, better functional recovery and quality of life. Our success rate in oncology surgeries is comparable to that of the best centers in India.
